Saadani National Park is Tanzania's only wildlife sanctuary that borders the Indian Ocean, offering a unique combination of beach and bush experiences. Covering 1,100 square kilometers, this park combines marine ecosystems with classic savannah landscapes, creating a biodiverse haven where lions might stroll along the beach and dolphins swim just offshore.

Key Features

1. Coastal Wilderness

Saadani is where the wilderness meets the sea. The park's 30km coastline features pristine beaches where wildlife viewing continues right up to the water's edge, offering safari experiences unlike anywhere else in East Africa.

2. Wami River Ecosystem

The life-giving Wami River flows through the park, supporting dense concentrations of hippos, crocodiles, and water birds. Boat safaris along the river provide exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities.

3. Wildlife Diversity

Saadani hosts an impressive array of species adapted to its coastal environment:

  • Elephants: Often seen crossing between the bush and beach areas
  • Lions: The park's famous beach-walking prides
  • Marine Life: Dolphins, sea turtles, and occasionally whales offshore
  • Over 400 bird species: Including mangrove specialists and coastal birds
"Saadani offers the extraordinary experience of watching elephants against an ocean backdrop or spotting lions resting in the shade of palm trees. This unique coastal wilderness provides a safari experience that combines the best of Tanzania's wildlife with the relaxation of beachside tranquility."

4. Historical Significance

The park contains remnants of the 19th-century slave and ivory trade, including the ruins of Saadani village which was once an important trading port. These historical sites add cultural depth to the wildlife experience.
